TPO vs PVC: Which is right for your building?

TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin)

The most popular commercial roofing membrane in North America. Cost-effective, energy-efficient, and proven performance for standard commercial applications.

  • Lower upfront cost
  • Excellent heat welded seams
  • Energy Star reflective
  • Good chemical resistance
  • Proven 20+ year track record

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)

Premium membrane for demanding environments. Superior chemical resistance, fire retardancy, and longevity. The choice for restaurants, chemical facilities, and high-performance applications.

  • Superior chemical resistance
  • Fire retardant properties
  • Longer service life
  • Better puncture resistance
  • Proven 40+ year track record

Two proven installation methods

Mechanically attached

Membrane is fastened directly to the deck with screws and plates, then seams are heat-welded. Lower material cost, faster installation.

  • Lower material costs
  • Faster installation
  • Works on most decks
  • Good wind uplift ratings

Fully adhered

Membrane is bonded to the substrate with adhesive over the entire roof area. Superior wind uplift performance and aesthetics.

  • Superior wind resistance
  • Smooth, seamless appearance
  • Better long-term performance
  • No visible fasteners

Six reasons single-ply systems make sense

Proven performance

40+ years of commercial installations across every climate zone. Well-understood maintenance and repair procedures.

Energy efficiency

White reflective surface reduces cooling loads significantly. All systems exceed Energy Star and Title 24 requirements.

Manufacturer support

Backed by Carlisle, GAF, and other major manufacturers with extensive warranty coverage and technical support.

Cost effective

Lower installed cost than most alternatives, with predictable lifecycle costs and readily available service contractors.

Design flexibility

Available in multiple colors, thicknesses, and attachment methods to meet architectural and performance requirements.

Code compliance

Meets or exceeds all California energy codes, fire ratings, and building requirements for commercial construction.

Professional installation from start to finish

Step 1

Deck preparation and inspection

We assess the existing structure, verify attachment capacity, and prepare the deck surface for proper membrane adhesion or mechanical attachment.

Step 2

Insulation and cover board installation

Tapered insulation is installed to provide proper drainage, followed by cover board as required by the system specification.

Step 3

Membrane installation

TPO or PVC membrane is rolled out and positioned, then either mechanically fastened or fully adhered per the approved details.

Step 4

Seam welding and testing

All membrane seams are heat-welded and tested for integrity. Every seam is probed and air-tested to ensure watertight performance.

Step 5

Flashing and final inspection

All penetrations, transitions, and perimeter details are completed and inspected. Full warranty documentation provided.
